    Yes, when you say furnace your refering to gas heating unit wich is a 115 volt for the blower in the furnace wich blower is use for the air conditioning, now for air conditioning purposes you need an evaporator coil, and the condensor unit a.k.a outside unit. An air handler its installed whenever there is a 240 volts available for the unit wich comes with electric heat strips, evap. coil and the blower.

    Furnaces are just for heating, but you can have a central air conditioning unit installed to blow cool air through the same duct work.

    Depends if it is a heat pump then they work in direct conjunction with each-other, if not then they share the same plenum to move the air around the house
