Air Conditioning Unit Not Working, What Could Be Wrong?

I purchased a house in December so naturally I did not try the air conditioning unit outside unitl the last couple of days. I do not have a heat pump just a Trane XE 1000 air unit. The thermastat is one that you have to program and I have not been able to do that very well. I noticed the house not cooling down but yet I could hear the furnace running so stupid me thought everything was ok until I noticed that the unit outside was not running. I checked the breakers on the inside of the house and also the breaker outside near the unit but nothing so far is working. Could it be something about not programing the thermastat correctly or is it more likely something wrong with the air conditioner?

If We Don’t Have Air Conditioning, Should We Leave Our Windows Open Or Closed With The Fans Running?

We’ve got an old house with no air conditioning. It’s about 98 degrees outside and the house is getting HOT. We’ve got fans running in the rooms we are in and turn them off when we leave the room. Should we leave the windows open to help get air circulating (but let in the outside heat), or close them (keeping the already hot air in, but the super hot oustide air out)?
Best answer could help lots of people during all these heat waves.
Thanks.

Apartment Furnace Putting Out “fryer” Smell?

Filed under Heating & AC FAQ
It started last week. At first I thought it was coming from my neighbors. Then I opened up the ulitity closet and was hit with a smell like there was a deep fryer in the closet. The apartment repairman says he couldn’t find anything wrong and it’s nothing. But he did replace the filter. That didn’t help. When I take off the access panel, I don’t see any soot or ashes or anything that looks out of place. There’s nothing in the blower compartment either. It doesn’t smell like gas, it smells like a deep fat fryer. What could it be? I’m tired of my apartment smelling like the kitchen of a fast food joint.
High Velocity Air Conditioning-good Idea Or Bad?

I am looking at a house that has the good old radiators for heat and the current owners use room air conditioners in each bedroom. Someone told me a solution to this would be to install high velocity air conditioning as it does not require massive installation of duct work. I am wondering how efficient it is and how expensive it is. I would be cooling an area that is about 1000 square feet–basically a living room, kitchen and 3 bedrooms. Also, how energy efficient are those old radiators. I have heard that they are very good at keeping the house warm–but are they expensive, can you put timers on them like you do with forced air heat, are they energy hogs?

I have a Daikin Heating/Cooling System in my flat. I haven’t got the foggiest on how to turn the heating system on and with it getting colder its going to be a problem. Is is a panel with pictures and the manual doesn’t say in plain English how to change the damn thing! Is there anyone in Southfields in South West London on here that can show me how to work it?

My sister and I just rented a house for college. The house has central heating. Approximately how much would it cost to get air conditioning added to it? Would there have to be an entirely new unit put in?
Air Condition And Heating?

Now I haven’t even gotten my car serviced yet, because its due to bad weather or I’ve been sick at home. I noticed that when I turn on my heater in my car. it makes a loud scrunching noise and I get no heat and its taken longer to warm up,and I have to admit I have to park my car outside in the cold. I still get cold air. I check and fill the antifreeze when its half-way or low. What could it be and would I need to get a costly repair job to fix it?
