We currently have a forced-air heating system in place, and have been told this is good news for having AC installed.

Approx. 3K. Can be more.
Call for an estimate.
It is if your Ductwork is Insulated. Some older companies didn’t insulate ductwork years ago. It will have to be insulated and sealed for AC. As for price most companies charge by the ton, around $1000 a ton. Some charge up to $2000 a ton or more. If you get a price somewhere in there you should be safe. Also get more that one estimate.
It’s good because they can use your exiting ductwork, which will cut down on the cost. Depending on the size of your home, I’d say it would be about 4-6 thousand dollars. Keep in mind that your HVAC contractor will probably mark up the cost of the actual AC unit by 50-100% over their cost. Isn’t that awful? Get a lot of estimates on comparable systems before you sign a contract.
I’d advise calling many, many places listed in the yelllow pages. When I had mine installed a few years ago the price varied by the thousands. I found a father and son team and got it unbelievably cheap. You could also ask everyone you know who has had it installed to see what they paid and if they are satisfied. I took the chance of going with the cheapest and have not regretted it. It has worked fine–absolutely no problems. It takes some time calling around, etc., but for me it was well worth the effort. Good luck.
I guess it all depends on where you’re located and how big your house is. We recently had a 4 ton unit installed – air handler and condenser – for $4900 and I’m in FL
