Is geothermal a good replacement for an oil furnce?
I use oil hotwater baseboard heat. Will geothermal hook in to this type of system?

- goe thermal is a good replacement for all types of heat. What geo thermal does is take the heat from the ground and transfer it to your home. The only thing is when there is not enough heat in the ground, it goes to a electric heat back up, that can get costly. Some areas power companies offer lower rates that are metered separately so I would check into that if you live in a cold area. And yes you can retro fit this to baseboard heat.
- Geothermal systems also work off of a water system so it should hook up with very little problem. The water is pumped up from quite deep in the ground, where the temp. remains around 50 degrees constantly. It's my understanding that the only real expense you'll have on a regular basis after the initial installation, will be the electricity to run the circulation pump. I have a friend who says it costs her about $300/year to heat and cool her house with geothermal. Wish I had it.
- Not too good. Your baseboard heat is rated for 180 degree water and the geothermal will be below that temp. so you will not get the output out of them that you will need. Works well with slab heat as that temp is usually around 120 - 140 deg. F. Average baseboard output is rated at 600 BTU per foot but when supplied 140 deg. F the output is 400 BTU per foot.
