Our Home Has A Boiler And Hot Water Radiators, For Heat. What Are The Best Options For Air Conditioning?

There aren’t any ducts in the house, which is only 1350 square feet…two story city home. We have a window air conditioner, but maybe want something more powerful, and with a better appearance.
Thank you!

  1. Robin the energy saver says:

I would recommend a ductless minisplit air conditioner. One of these units Ductless minisplits have a single condenser unit outside the house, and small-diameter piping that runs from the condenser to each of several evaporator units inside. We have such a system in the house we are in now; the evaporators are all on inside walls of the upstairs bedrooms. It is quiet (the condenser is up on the flat roof so we barely hear that) and works quite well. It requires no duct work, and another bonus is that because each room has its own evaporator unit, you can control room temperatures individually.
A ductless minisplit is also better than using several window AC units because it doesn’t use up your window space – makes it easier to open the windows when the air is cooler outside than in, so you can take advantage of natural cooling. And it looks better.
Compared to central air, a ductless minisplit can be far more efficient because you only cool the rooms you want to. Many of them come with remote controls so you can easily turn the unit up or down as needed. I find ours cools the room down very quickly – much more quickly than the whole house AC in our previous home is able to cool any of the rooms in our house.
And the best thing about them – for your situation – is that you don’t need ductwork. A few holes in the walls, which are easily patched, and hopefully the pipes can be run through attic or within walls so things look nice and neat.
