High Velocity Air Conditioning-good Idea Or Bad?

I am looking at a house that has the good old radiators for heat and the current owners use room air conditioners in each bedroom. Someone told me a solution to this would be to install high velocity air conditioning as it does not require massive installation of duct work. I am wondering how efficient it is and how expensive it is. I would be cooling an area that is about 1000 square feet–basically a living room, kitchen and 3 bedrooms. Also, how energy efficient are those old radiators. I have heard that they are very good at keeping the house warm–but are they expensive, can you put timers on them like you do with forced air heat, are they energy hogs?

Air Conditioner And Heat Not Working?

I noticed this morning that the heat hadn’t come on and it was set at 2 degrees higher than the actual temperature was. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but when I tried to turn on the air conditioner later this afternoon, nothing happened. No fan blowing inside for the heat and no fan blowing outside for the air conditioner. I noticed at the same time that the thermostat was acting weird, turning on an off by itself and changing settings if I tapped on it. I changed the batteries and it kept doing the same thing. A trip to Home Depot and an hour spent replacing the thermostat later, still no heat/air conditioning. The new thermostat seems to be operating properly (no flipping around or turning off by itself) and I’ve checked and rechecked the wires to make sure they’re clipped into the correct spot and all of the jumpers seem to be in place correctly. One thing that I did think was weird was when I took off the old thermostat, there was a very short black wire that had been clipped into both RH and RC but not into the wall. I didn’t clip that one into the new one because the instructions for the new thermostat didn’t mention it. My wires consist of W, Y, G, and RH and the thermostat manual doesn’t have any troubleshooting instructions in it. Before answering, consider that I’m a girl and my husband is out of town, so please talk in a language I can understand. I’m not an idiot (I did install a new thermostat by myself, thought maybe not correctly), but I need to be able to understand what to do, especially if it’s complicated. Thank you!!

What Type Of Air Conditioning System Is This?

I live in an old skyrise building where the air and heat are centrally controlled in the building. I have a rectangular box sitting in my condo that controls the air flow but not the temperature.
So basically, I can cut the AC or heat off and on, which ever is running at th time in the whole building.
What is this type of cooling/heating system called? And what is the name of the box sitting in my unit, because I want to replace it?

Central Air Conditioning Smells Like The Heat Is On?

The central air was on and it started to smell like the heat had been turned on for the first time. I changed the air filter in the hallway then I checked the thermostat & it was the air conditioning that was on not the heat. (I thought my husband maybe had turned the heat on before he left for work) I opened the closet where the inside unit is and I found water on the floor. A few weeks ago ice formed on the copper pipe inside so I blew out the white pipe (the one that carries the water to drain outside) and I flushed it with bleach & water. It cleared up the clog/bacteria or what ever it was and the water drained like it should. It’s been working fine ever since then until tonight. I’m scared to turn it back on. The inside and outside unit is only a little over a year old. Please help if you can. Thanks!!

How Do I Add Central Air Conditioning To A 100 Years Old House?

January 26, 2010 by admin

My house is 100 years old and has forced hot air heat. The gas furnace is a 90% efficiency and 5 years old. I have a 7 years old central air condition system that is used but in very good shape. Does anyone know if I can somehow combine the two. I am very cost conscious, so I would like to do it myself.
Please off any and all suggestions.
Thank you
