When discussing pay rate for building trades, most people speak in terms of what the unionized work force is making. Although each trade makes a different amount of $ per hour which goes directly on their pay check, there are many other financial benefits to consider when determining who makes more. This is considered the total package of wages and benefits. Some trades, and it varies by region, give up benefits such as a better health plan that includes drugs, glasses, dental, retirees medical; or a generous retirement package infavor of my money directly on their check. So when someone says they make $30 per hour, that is typically the money on their check but perhaps their total package is $39 per hour that includes all their benefits. The next guy may make $28 per hour but his benefit package is much higher and his total hourly package could be $45 per hour. This can vary in both directions. So don’t be misled by only asking about the wage portion of what one of these trades people make. You may be missing out on a much larger total package that would save you in the long run by supply you with health care versus you paying on your own or having to save more on your own to make up the difference for your retirement.
I am an electrician, my dad was a sheetmetal worker. He told me when it was apparent that I was getting into the building trades, to be an electrician because in his view it was a far better trade to get into which would allow me to use more mental skills than manual skills. As for a plummer, well…don’t bite your finger nails was the advise I herd them tell their apprentices.
