Central Air Conditioning Question – Fan Motor?

problem: when trying to heat the house no warm air blows (only cold) until after we turn the heat up enough for the coils in the furnance (emergency heat) to come on.
we had ac guys come out and they checked everything and replaced the capacitor.
this worked about a day and a half
exact same problem came back. we have not called anyone yet.
additonal info: last night i tried to cool the house, theromstat said it was cooling but no air at all was blowing. i walked out to the unit and i heard buzzing (i heard this when the ac guys were working on getting the heat going) and finally after about 5 minutes, the fan started turning.
i went back inside and cold air was blowing………. the fan outside quit turning again off and on.
the fan blade turns freely (i saw the guy check that so i checked it as well)
basically:
when heating: cold air blows until coils in furnace come on (emergency heat), it should at least be warm when you bump it up a few degrees
when cooling: no air blows until the fan outside starts turning which seems to be sporadic.
it seems that maybe instead of a capacitor maybe its another problem
if its the fan motor, i know i can replace that myself because i took it out a few years ago and oiled it no problem.
what does everyone think? i have an ohm tester but if you tell me to use it you will need to tell me exactly what setting to put it on and explain it to me like a 3rd grader :)
thanks in advance for any ideas or help!

Question To Previous About Cooling And Heating Blanket?

I asked about an electric cooling and heating blanket. Did you know there are some made that use water to transmit the cooling or heating. There is a pump to circulate the water from the cooling and heating devices? I haven’t yet found a price, but I’m sure they would be expensive. They are used in the medical field for heat related maladys and for heating after hypothermia. Anybody know how to purchase one and the price?

My Question To An Air Conditioner Contractor, Do You Guarantee Your Work And Equipment For 5 Years?

We purchased a house about 2 years ago and which the previous owner replaced the air conditioner / furnace with a new system. The problem is that sometimes the condenser wants to start, or runs for about ½ or 1 second and stops and keeps going ON and OFF but never runs. Or sometimes the condenser will run and cool the house for about 15 to 30 minutes and stops cooling (although the condenser keeps running). We called an independent AC repairman, he immediately “found the problem” and told us that the new AC was not properly installed. He indicated that there was excessive high pressure of the refrigerant in the copper lines due to a plug in the system. He said he would never have installed this unit at this house and did not want to get involved trying to fix a problem cause by the installer of the new AC unit. He indicated that the old AC system used R22 refrigerant and the new Trane XR12 AC unit uses R410 refrigerant, and should have never been installed because any trace of the old R22 refrigerant left in the unit is not compatible with the R410 refrigerant and will cause the oil in the refrigerant to “harden” and cause the line to plug up and stop the AC from operating properly.
We then called the AC Company that installed the new AC, they have been to the house twice, the first repairman did not find the problem (we told him about the incompatibility of the R22 and the R410, and he said that he has never heard of this problem). The second repairman that came out and verified the very high pressure in the system and indicated that R22 and R410 refrigerants are not compatible and will cause the system to plug up and stop functioning properly, he indicated that the system needed to be “flushed out’ and that the “dryer” in the system needed to be replaced with a new one. I indicated they should be responsible for both labor and materials since the unit was not properly installed. He said they would call me back the next day (this was about 1 week ago); at this point I do not believe they are going to call back.
My question to an Air Conditioner Contractor: Do you guarantee your work and equipment for 5 years? And would you come back to fix the incompatible R22 and R410 refrigerant problem on a unit installed 4 years ago. Also, would you still come back even when there has been a change in home ownership? And yes we have the original contact for the unit in our hand and it indicates a 5 year warrantee.

Trane Central Heating And Air Conditioning Question?

I have a large Trane Heat Pump in my home. My question is this, The thermostat is placed on the wall in the hallway directly under the air intake and the filter is located above in the ceiling. It seems like this is the coldest and draftiest place in the home because it is where the intake is drawing in the air. Wouldn’t the system do a better job if I relocated the thermostat to a place where the air temperature is more constant?
Thanks!

I Have A Question About Balancing A Heating/cooling System In A Home.?

My home is a vaulted 2 story townhome. The second floor is open to the first, in other words I can look down from the second floor and see the entire first floor. The air flow is strongest to the upper floor. I am not sure how to set the vents for the most economical use of my heating and cooling energy. I have looked and there are no dampers in the system and I would prefer not to have to install any if I can avoid it. What is the best way to set the vents in the rooms to make the most economical use of my heating/cooling system?

There is no heating/cooling vents down but there is ventilation running through the joists with floor vents to the main floor off them, can I cut into those and put registers in the ceiling off those or do I have to run new ventilation for the basement?
